If you’ve ever had any contact with our office, you’ve probably come across Shirley Hoy, our veteran associate director.
Shirley is the lady responsible for keeping Insight Associates running smoothly. Super organised, she’s known for her mild, calm, refined manner.
Well, that’s true during the work week…
On the weekends, her wild side comes out!
Shirley is a dedicated biker, who often rides 250 miles or more on a Sunday on her powerful BMW GS 650.
And this week is the highlight of her year…
By the time you get this email, Shirley will have taken up her post as a marshal on the Isle of Man TT races – often called one of the most dangerous motorcycle racing events in the world.
Her job is to preserve the safety of the competitors, looking for oil, water, fallen branches or other debris on the track, which is 37.7 miles long and has more than 200 corners. She also preserves the safety of spectators, ensuring they don’t step on the track. She will have the same powers as the police!
This is Shirley’s second year as a marshal:

She says, “it’s incredible fun being on the island and riding as fast as you like over perfect roads, with no potholes or hazards. I thought I’d go quite slowly but before I knew it, was doing 100mph over the mountain. Of course that’s nothing compared to the speed the riders reach during the competition!”
And of course, she loves being involved in such an iconic event, doing her bit to keep everyone safe.
It makes sense – because really, there’s no contradiction between Shirley’s role as TT marshal and her work for Insight Associates. They’re actually very similar.
They’re both about ensuring that everything runs smoothly, with no obstacles to slow you down.
At the TT, she does this physically, removing dangerous hazards so that riders can achieve maximum speed without injuring themselves.
At Insight Associates, she enables the team to take away all the financial hazards that can slow down your business and (just occasionally) even kill it… …Hazards like not knowing you have a huge tax bill coming up, struggling with a backlog of unpaid invoices or not approving expenses in advance.
The method, in both cases, involves being ruthless about rules and systems. At the TT, Shirley follows very precise procedures to ensure that the track stays clear and that spectators are protected.
At Insight, she helps build the processes necessary to manage your company’s money flawlessly – whether that’s developing cashflow forecasts, instituting credit control procedures or establishing a system to approve expenses before the money’s been spent.
And she makes sure they’re followed… Her favourite saying is: “There’s a procedure for a reason!”
Believe me, you’ll notice the difference.
