Meet the team – Our Finance Manager, Lisa Curtis

For the next instalment of our Meet the Team series, we put the spotlight on Lisa, our Finance Manager. Lisa joined the Insight team in February 2023 with a wealth of experience across multiple commercial sectors, including manufacturing, property and construction.

Lisa’s career path

Lisa’s path into finance was an interesting one. “I started completing my ex-husband’s Self Assessment tax returns as he was a self-employed builder”, she explains. “I enjoyed this, so completed a bookkeeping course, then studied for my AAT Level 2 in 1997”. Lisa paused her studies and gained a range of experience in financial management, working in Payroll and as a Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger Clerk. After this, Lisa went back to complete her AAT, which she says is the proudest achievement of her career.

A typical day

Lisa’s working days are very busy, as she always has a variety of tasks to complete. Usually on her to-do list is checking cashflows, preparing VAT returns, raising payments and purchase orders, and meeting with clients.

Preparing and analysing management accounts is Lisa’s favourite part of the job. “I really enjoy working out why something doesn’t look right”. What Lisa doesn’t like so much are the more mundane tasks, such as bank reconciliation and purchase ledger posting, “but then again, they help me when completing the management accounts, so I suppose the tasks go hand in hand!”

The best parts

For Lisa, her job is about making life that bit easier for the businesses we work with. “I hope I have given clients more understanding of the figures we produce each month”, she reflects.

There is one client success story that particularly sticks in Lisa’s mind. “When I started using a client’s bespoke spreadsheets, I noticed some discrepancies in the data. I looked into what was going wrong, then spoke with the client and explained how to input data in the correct format to prevent the error recurring.”

Out of the office

If Lisa was stranded on a desert island, she would want “a box of matches so I can make a fire, and a barrel of malt whiskey. Maybe Bear Grylls as well, as he could forage for my food and make me a shelter.”

A surprising fact about Lisa is that she loves fossil hunting. So, if she was stuck on an island, she would certainly have something to do to pass the time!
